Nursing and Dental Sedation - What You Need To Know

We are often asked by pregnant and nursing people if they can still receive dental care while pregnant or nursing. OF COURSE! Not only is it just “ok,” but it’s also important! Today we have guest blogger Dr. Amanda Tavoularis, who has answered a few common questions about dental care while nursing. Thank you, Dr. Tavoularis!

by Dr. Amanda Tavoularis* (dentably.com)

When you’re nursing, it’s important to monitor what you put into your body. What you take in can potentially be passed to your child, and that’s a scary thought for many people. One piece that has a lot of misinformation is dental sedation and whether it’s safe during pregnancy. Putting drugs into your body is always a place to pause, but it’s important to understand what is safe and what is not. I’ve worked as a dentist for over 20 years, and have helped educate people on their oral health, including interactions between sedation and lactation. Let’s take a look at what dental sedation is, and what you need to know when undergoing it while nursing.

The three big things that most nursing parents ask in regards to dental sedation are:

- Is it safe for me and my baby?

- Will it interrupt my feeding schedule?

- Will it affect my milk supply?

We’ll take a look at each one of these points, and answer the pressing questions that many new parents have about this important aspect of their dental health.

Is Dental Sedation Safe While Breastfeeding?

The first big question is whether dental sedation is safe at all during lactation. In the majority of cases, the answer is yes, most types of sedative used are out of your system quickly and won’t be passed onto your child through your milk. This means that the most popular sedative drugs your dentist might use are perfectly safe to use while nursing, and will have no effect on the health of your child.

Nitrous oxide for example, a commonly used sedative, is virtually insoluble in the bloodstream and extremely unlikely to be passed to your child. It is rapidly eliminated by your body, and poses little risk for a nursing parent or the child. You won’t be passing it on to your baby through your milk.

Conscious sedation, usually delivered by an IV for more invasive surgery like wisdom teeth removal, is also considered to be safe. These drugs are rarely transferred to breast milk, or do so in such small quantities as to not be a cause for concern. Overall, the majority of sedatives used today for dental procedures are safe for nursing parents to take.

Will it Interrupt My Feeding Schedule?

Other than not being able to feed during the procedure, no, most sedatives will not disrupt your feeding schedule. You’ll be able to feed after receiving them as soon as you feel strong enough to do so. The drugs are rapidly eliminated from your body, so it’s safe to feed shortly after without fear of passing them to your child. It’s also recommended to do so right before the procedure, that way you’re not worrying about your child during the procedure.

Can Sedatives Affect My Milk Supply?

As mentioned above, most sedatives are not transferred to your milk or do so in very small quantities. This means it will not have any adverse effect on your milk supply, and you can go on feeding your baby. As mentioned above, you don’t need to skip a beat and can go on feeding shortly after the procedure is completed.

As always, if in doubt speak with your dentist. They will be happy to go over your options, and provide a treatment plan that is safe for both you and your baby. With all the above in mind, you can now go confidently to your next appointment without fear of harming your child. Don’t let nursing be an excuse to let your dental health lapse, it can seem hard at times but make sure you’re looking after yourself as well.

Adventures in low supply, PPD, & Triumph.

Why was I doing all this? Was I really going to put myself through this with an almost three-year-old, an infant who needed me, and a history of postpartum depression brought about partially by self-imposed expectations that would be impossible to achieve? Was I going to work this hard for one-third of his needs when I had all this donor milk and formula as a back-up? Would working this hard for the same results make me crazy? Or at least depressed again? Was it worth that to me?

...because I want you to be successful

"I will take 'Things your midwife says' for $1,000, Alex."

Alex- The answer is: "because I want you to be successful!"

"Why do I need a doula?"

Alex- You got it! go again.

I often get asked by clients if & why they should hire a doula. My answer every time is 'because I want you to be successful.' As a certified nurse-midwife, my role is clinical. It is my responsibility to monitor your adaptations to the labor, birth, and postpartum process; listen to your baby's heart beat; listen to your body language & fear & joys; monitor your blood pressure and temperature; prescribe and administer the appropriate herbs or medications; be prepared for emergencies & more. Sometimes, during a long or extraordinarily difficult labor, I just need to step out of your space and think.  While I am brain storming creative solutions to help your labor progress, or performing clinical tasks, or charting in your medical record, or checking (and double checking) that all the emergency supplies are set out, triple checking that all the emergency supplies are working, and so on- your labor marches on.

You still need those hip squeezes while I am charting. You still need those encouraging words while I am setting up the oxygen tank. You still need a constant presence of a skilled birth worker who knows just the right thing to say or just the right place to massage.

I enjoy doing all those things too, but they are just a bonus when they are coming from me. You really hired me to make sure your baby breathes, to give you stitches, and to keep you safe. Doulas are such an integral part of the birth team, so much so that I require them for first time moms!

The evidence for doulas is convincing. Check out this article from Evidence Based Birth: Click Here

Every year we celebrate World Doula Week from March 22-28. Here in the greater Dallas Fort Worth metroplex, we are very fortunate to work with so many incredible doulas! Here are just a fraction of them, who I have had the privilege of working with & learning from. The birthing families (and the providers!) of DFW are fortunate to have you all!

BundleBorn BFF: Dallas Ft. Worth Belly Cast

Dallas Ft. Worth Belly Cast is a BundleBorn BFF (Business Friends Forever)! They are donating door prizes to be raffled off at the Kick Off Party on July 24th from 2-4pm at Purple Kiwi in Frisco, TX.

Name: Taylor Rhodes-Estrada

Email Address: MyDallasDoula@gmail.com

Business Name: Dallas Ft. Worth Belly Cast

Website: www.MyDallasDoula.com

What services &/or products are offered by your company?

Professional belly casting based on your individual preferences; from belly bowls to full torso. I offer basic casts as well as different finishing options including resurfacing, reinforcement, and painting.

Tell me how you got into this line of work?

I studied sculpture and ceramics in college, and loved the ability to manipulate something into a new form. In 2013 when I became a doula, I liked the idea of offering clients a unique way to remember their pregnancy. My love of sculpture and welcoming new life found a union in belly casting.

How does your business differ from your competitors?

During the casting session, I enjoy talking, laughing, and connecting with the mom as we capture her belly's form. Pregnancy is such a short, but significant time in a woman's life. It's incredible to see her reaction when the cast is removed, as if suddenly she is really seeing what others see!

You're a new addition to the crayon box, what color would you be and why?

Bisque: the color I should incorporate into my wardrobe more, because it hides all the splashes of plaster that inevitably land on me during casting sessions!

If you were on an island and could only bring three things, what would you bring?

A lighter, a knife, and the spirit of MacGyver to craft anything else I might need.

What three things do you need to be successful in this business?

A calm presence, laughter, and lots of coconut oil are essential since casting does involve slathering a person in strips of gauze.

What goals do you have for the future of your business?

Connect with photographers in order to incorporate belly bowls into newborn photography sessions.

Exploring all the options for body casting so that I may offer intricately detailed work in the future.

Transforming the belly cast into a functional piece of art, so that only you and your family would know its true origins.

How do you prefer clients/customers contact you?

E-mail, call, or text.
Visit Dallas Ft. Worth Belly Cast on Facebook for more ideas of how you can incorporate your belly art into your home.

Do you have any additional message for the readers?

This is a great opportunity to celebrate your new shape, and your new baby. Siblings and partners are encouraged to participate.

Business Name: Buoyant Birth

What services &/or products are offered by your company?

Birthing pool rentals and sales.

Tell me how you got into this line of work?

We rented birth pools for the births of our sons in 2011 and 2012. Both times, there were pieces that we had to find ourselves - my husband ended up going to Home Depot twice while I was in labor with our youngest.

Midwife and doula friends talked about what a challenge birth pools were for them, and encouraged me to start a business where every single thing was provided that families needed to make the birth pools work...so I did!

How does your business differ from your competitors?

We provide not just the pool, but all of the accessories (including towels!) and we ship all over the United States.

We're also authorized distributors of both La Bassine and Birth Pool in a Box for all of their products if you need to purchase pools and accessories.

You're a new addition to the crayon box, what color would you be and why?

I'd be the clear blue color of the water in Belize - it's my husband's and my favorite place to scuba dive.

If you were on an island and could only bring three things, what would you bring?

Mask, snorkel, and fins. If I'm going to be stuck on an island, I'm going to spend every day in the water!

What three things do you need to be successful in this business?

Strong arms, a box cutter, and a big vision. Lots of heavy lifting, lots of opening boxes, and lots of ideas to make this business grow.

What goals do you have for the future of your business?

We have a map in our office of all of the states where we've shipped pools - I want the whole thing colored in!

How do you prefer clients/customers contact you?

Email, phone, text - whatever works best for them!

What services &/or products are offered by your company?

Placenta encapsulation throughout the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex

Tell me how you got into this line of work?

Maria was doing encapsulations for her doula clients; Maryn was getting certified to do them. We were having coffee one day, and started talking about how amazing it would be to partner to offer placenta encapsulations. We launched Dallas-Ft. Worth Placenta in September 2015 and it's been growing quickly ever since.

How does your business differ from your competitors?

We offer 24/7 on call pickup anywhere in the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex, with guaranteed 48 hour turnaround time. We have dedicated commercial space for processing placentas.

You're a new addition to the crayon box, what color would you be and why?

We'd be the color of the coffee we drink every morning during our daily planning meeting.

If you were on an island and could only bring three things, what would you bring?

A whiteboard, markers, and an eraser - that's how we do our best work!

What three things do you need to be successful in this business?

Flexibility. A fully charged phone. Lots and lots of bleach.

What goals do you have for the future of your business?

  • Continue to grow the number of placentas we do each month.

  • Lobby QT to open a location within walking distance of our office (helllllooooo Diet Coke with vanilla and crushed ice!).

How do you prefer clients/customers contact you?

Phone, email, text - whatever the client prefers.

What services &/or products are offered by your company?

I am a family oriented photography studio specializing in newborn portraiture. I also offer baby, children and family sessions to capture all stages of a growing family. My goal is to provide every client with a session that is fun, unique, and completely relaxed. I create portrait art for clients homes that captures the essence of their family's personality combined with my artistic vision.

Tell me how you got into this line of work.

As most new moms, after I had my daughter, I wanted to capture every little feature of her and all the milestones as she grew. In doing that, I quickly found my passion for newborn photography and took the initiative to learn the proper way to pose and make sure the baby is completely safe and comfortable at all times. I can't say enough that I love what I do and love getting to share my passion with so many amazing families.

How does your business differ from your competitors?

I LOVE to customize photography sessions for every client; that's what everyone deserves. I am able to photograph a baby or family and create beautiful artwork that will last a lifetime. I focus on keeping the images timeless with natural elements that give you a warm and fuzzy feeling. I include siblings as well as the parents during the newborn sessions to show the loving relationship between your family and your new baby.

Thought and care are put into every session to create a unique and memorable experience. The art I'm creating is meant to be displayed on the walls for everyone to see in your home and enjoy for years to come.

If you were on an island and could only bring three things, what would you bring?

My Camera, Relaxing Music, and a Journal

What three things do you need to be successful in this business?

As a newborn photographer patience is essential for every session, along with creativity and a true passion for creating beautiful works of art that will be cherished for a lifetime.

I welcome the opportunity to work with healthcare professionals to showcase their patients or their specialty in their office. Customized art creates a warm and inviting waiting area that shows how much the practice cares about its patients.

Business Name: B.A.M! Lactation Nutrition

Website: www.BAMomma.com

What services &/or products are offered by your company?

We created a line of galactogogue rich crackers, snack bars and cookies that are designed to help boost milk production through nutrition.

Tell me how you got into this line of work?

Bad Ass Momma, B.A.M! for short, began because of a friend in need.

A nursing momma with a sick child, worn out and struggling she needed a little help. I was there to hold her hand through it and do what I do best: keep her fed. By keeping her fed I helped her do what she does best: take care of her family.

As the founder and a pastry chef I worked with one Momma, then many Mommas to create a line of products that can appeal to all tastes and nutritional needs. What started as a loving gesture for one has turned into a way to help many more Mommas.

How does your business differ from your competitors?

B.A.M! is different from competitors because we took so many things int consideration when crafting our recipes. Our ingredient lists are simple but cater to every Momma's individual needs.
We offer items that are free from soy, wheat, egg, fenugreek.
We have options that are vegan and all items are made with the lowest glycemic index sugar available and are low in sodium.
We put tons of thought into how to best provide help for EVERY Momma's needs.

You're a new addition to the crayon box, what color would you be and why?

Purple Passion, because we LOVE what we're doing. It makes us all arm and fuzzy inside.

If you were on an island and could only bring three things, what would you bring?

Coconut oil, coffee and a king sized sheet set.

What three things do you need to be successful in this business?

Coffee, a true passion for supporting all means of mothering, ingenuity in recipe formulation to continue to create tasty items to offer diversity of flavor to mothers.

What goals do you have for the future of your business?

We would love to see our product on store shelves and in doctor's offices.

Our biggest goal is to build a brand strong enough to draw donations that could help place our product in the hands of less fortunate and/or less informed Mommas for free. We would love to be part of an education program that teaches new mothers how to best utilize all of the ways they can help their babies grow and be healthy.

How do you prefer clients/customers contact you?

Why the name: BundleBorn?

Many people are wondering where this made-up word "BundleBorn" comes from and why I chose this as the name for my practice. Well...it is indeed a made-up word. In fact, it was made up by my daughter, Laila, when she was just 2 years old!

My husband and I had decided to have our children close together. By the time our third daughter was born, we had a 3 yr old (Amara), a 2 yr old (Laila), and now a newborn (Sadie). We were tired for a solid six years. I only have brothers, so I had always wanted to be the mother to daughters. I was over-the-moon in love with my girls!

Thanks to a dear group of friends I had met during the course of my journey into motherhood, I was finally getting the hang of baby wearing by the time Sadie was born. One day while wearing Sadie in my ring sling, Laila said (in her sweetest toddler voice) "Awwww, she wants to be in her bundle born?"

From that day forward, all versions of carriers, slings, and wraps have been called "bundle borns" in our home. I immediately fell in love with her new term and knew in that very instant that I would someday have a practice named BundleBorn. Laila is now about to turn 10 years old and is the biggest cheerleader for BundleBorn Midwifery. She insisted on creating an Instagram account for BundleBorn Midwifery...if you see any random unicorn or Miranda Sings posts its because my marketing manager is a 10 yr old girl.
